Car Care Tips:
7 Ways to Save on Fuel

Theoretically, the best way to save on fuel would be to buy an electric car or a hybrid. You’d be helping preserve the environment and gaining tax benefits in addition to saving on gasoline. If this is not an option for you right now, here are the top 7 strategies you can apply to save on fuel.

7. Coast when possible but always do so in gear, never in neutral. The latter is dangerous as it disables both changing the speed and braking, plus it does not save any more gas than coasting in gear does.

6. Balance AC and wind. Tests show that using Air Conditioning versus rolling down 4 windows in your car is a wash at 55 miles per hour. At lower speeds, AC uses up more fuel, while at higher speeds rolling down the windows uses up more gas due to the lower aerodynamic efficiency. So, unless either the heat or the pollution is unbearable and the savings would simply not be worth the discomfort, turn off AC and keep your windows open when driving in town.

5. Watch your speed. Here’s another reason not to exceed speed limits! Unless reaching your destination 5 minutes earlier is a matter of life or death, you will be better off maintaining a steady speed while following slower cars than repeatedly accelerating in order to pass them.

4. Minimize idling. Switch off your engine when you wait your turn at a drive-through, gas station, red light, or in a traffic jam. Avoid left turns, especially those without traffic lights. Driving an extra couple hundred yards could use less gas than waiting for the traffic to clear.

3. Minimize the amount of driving. Carefully plan your itineraries. Your mileage is better when you drive with your engine well warmed up, so travel to your farthest errand destination first, and to the others on your way back home. Avoid driving during the rush hour, and carpool, ride a bicycle, or walk as much as possible. The last two options will help improve your health in addition to helping you save on fuel.

2. Shop online. Supporting your local businesses is great when they have what you need or want. For everything else, there’s online shopping. Not only does it help you save on fuel, checkout time is also much shorter. And you can also earn some cash back.

1. Take good care of your car. Change your oil regularly, use good tires appropriate for the weather and make sure they always have proper air pressure. Save also by using an efficient fuel additive.

What to look for in a fuel additive?

Most fuel additives on the market that claim to improve your car’s mileage merely clean its fuel injectors. This may improve your mileage somewhat, but studies show the typical improvement to be insignificant.

An efficient, environment-friendly fuel additive will not only clean your fuel injectors, but rather your car’s entire fuel system, including carburetor, combustion chamber, intake valves and ports. As a result, in addition to improving your mileage, it will reduce your exhaust emissions and help extend the life of your engine.
