“You Don’t Have to Be a Model
to Have Beautiful, Youthful, Healthy Skin”

Dear Visitor,

Your skin is one of the first things other people notice about you.

You might find yourself not getting a date or your dream job because of those pimples or other blemishes. The prospective date may find them unattractive. The prospective employer may think that if you can’t take proper care of yourself, you wouldn’t take proper care of your job, either.

Your skin is your body’s largest organ.
Are you giving it most of your attention?

This is NOT just the matter of esthetics. Your skin actually mirrors what’s happening inside your body, mind and spirit.

If your body is malnourished or exposed to toxins…
If free radicals get out of control…
If you are unhappy…
…your skin will show that!

• Nutrient deficiencies can cause a huge variety of skin diseases.

• Exposure to toxins and free radicals speeds up your skin’s aging process, causing wrinkles, discoloration, and lack of elasticity.

• Mental or emotional anguish may be reflected not only in your facial expressions, but also in the unhealthy appearance of your skin and hair.

Do you want your skin to glow with
health, youthfulness, and natural beauty?

Give your body all of the nutrients it needs, as well as protection against toxins and free radicals, and strive to be mentally and emotionally happy.

You can keep your skin healthy, youthful and beautiful from the inside out and from the outside in.

Healthy, Youthful, Beautiful Skin: From the Inside Out

Notes:

Excessive consumption of certain vitamins and minerals can cause severe health consequences — never exceed the recommended daily values. Always consult your doctor or a certified nutritionist before you start any supplementation program or drastically change your diet.

Liver, other organ meats, egg yolks and dairy products are high in cholesterol and saturated fats. Limit consumption to occasional “treats” if you’re heart-healthy, avoid if you have a heart condition.

Fish (particularly shellfish), dairy (milk, cheese, yogurt, etc.) and nuts may cause allergic reactions. Avoid if you know you’re allergic; consult an allergy specialist if you develop a rash or have another adverse reaction; call 911 immediately if you have difficulty breathing.

Healthy, Youthful, Beautiful Skin: From the Outside In

In addition to caring for your skin’s health through proper nutrition, you can help your skin retain — or regain — its youthfulness and beauty by taking good care of it from the outside.

What makes your skin look and feel great?

Through in-depth research and experience, we have identified the following Seven Principles of Healthy Skin Care:

1. Know your skin type

2. Keep your skin clean

3. Keep your pores small

4. Help your skin maintain an adequate pH (acidity) level

5. Help your skin maintain oil and moisture balance

6. Protect your skin against free-radical damage

7. Protect your skin against the harsh environment

1. Know your skin type

Different skin types require different skin care regimens. Using the wrong regimen could harm your skin instead of helping it.

In terms of oil/moisture balance, your skin can be:
• oily
• dry
• combination (usually oily forehead/nose/chin and dry cheeks)
• normal

In addition, any of those skin types can be sensitive — prone to damage.

2. Keep your skin clean

Cleansing is the first step in any skin care regimen. Its aim is to remove:
• surface dirt;
• all makeup;
• potentially harmful micro-organisms (bacteria); and
• the top layer of dead skin cells.

For best results, use lightly acidic (non-soap), non-comodegenic (non-pore clogging) cream cleansers, such as Skintelligence Hydra Derm Deep Cleansing Emulsion.

Exfoliating cleansers are best for removing dead skin cells. Skin exfoliation is suitable for greasy or normal skin, but should be used with caution on dry or sensitive skin.

Again, look for non-pore clogging products, such as Timeless Prescription Facial Exfoliating Cleanser with Enzymes or Timeless Prescription Advanced Hydroxy Face Peel and Neutralizer (the “peel” part). The former is a pH balanced cream, so it helps maintain your skin’s acidity level. The latter comes as moist face pads.

While general cleansers will take care of most makeup, you really need to be careful around the eyes as the skin there is particularly delicate. Choose a gentle product, such as Motives Gentle Eye Makeup Remover or Motives Waterproof Eye Makeup Remover. They are both safe for users of contact lenses.

Also, if you often suffer from chapped lips, you could benefit from Motives Exfoliating Lip Treatment and Motives Vitamin C Lip Treatment or Motives Hydrating Lip Balm. The first one removes dead cells from your lips, the latter two hydrate them for a healthy, youthful look and feel.

And for body parts other than your face, choose a non-alkaline product, such as the Royal Spa Imperial Blend Bath & Shower Gel. It helps maintain your skin’s optimal acidity level and moisturizes it while cleansing. It also provides your skin with vitamins A and E for antioxidant protection against aging- and disease-causing free radicals.

3. Keep your pores small

Facial masks and toners further cleanse your pores and then tighten them, making them less susceptible to acne and other infections. If you use both, first apply the mask, and then the toner after you’ve washed the mask off.

Please note that you should not be using a mask every day — twice a week, maximum three times if you have “normal” skin. If your skin is very sensitive, you might want to avoid masks altogether, and if it is dry or oily, use masks that are meant for your skin type, and use them sparingly (no more than once a week).

On the other hand, toners are a great complement for any cleanser (as well as mask) as they completely remove any particles that might be remaining on your skin or in your pores.

A good mask is the herbal Skintelligence Facial Firming Masque. It tightens your skin very nicely and dries, holding it in place. Keep it on for about 12 minutes, and make sure you neither talk nor laugh or smile with it on as it will crack and you’ll have to start all over. It rinses off very easily with warm water, and makes your face feel very smooth and refreshed.

A good toner appropriate for all skin types is the Timeless Prescription MDI Firming Activator. In addition to removing any remnants of your cleanser and/or mask, it helps both firm and moisturize your skin.

4. Help your skin maintain an adequate pH (acidity) level

Your skin’s optimal pH level varies among various parts of your body, falling between 4.5 and 6. Its slight acidity helps protect you against harmful bacteria and environmental pollutants.

Skin pH should fall between 4.5 and 6

Most soaps are alkaline, and as such they increase your skin’s pH, lowering its ability to defend you against germs and pollution. See the cleansing section above for details and recommendations.

You can maintain your skin’s optimal pH level by applying Skintelligence pH Skin Normalizer* as part of your daily skin care regimen. In addition to adjusting your skin’s acidity level, it further cleanses, exfoliates, and moisturizes your skin, making your face feel fresh and rejuvenated.

back to 7 Principles | back to top

5. Help your skin maintain oil and moisture balance

For the skin to remain smooth, supple and healthy, it needs to maintain an adequate moisture level. The following factors can cause a constant loss of your skin’s natural moisture:
• insufficient production of skin oils;
• certain nutrient deficiencies;
• aging and weakening of the skin;
• exposure to the elements (sun, wind, cold, etc.);
• excessive use of degreasing and cleansing products on the skin;
• air conditioning and heating; and
• exposure to certain chemicals and pollutants.

If you have dry skin, you know how it feels without a moisturizer applied to it on a regular basis — tight and uncomfortable. In addition, dry skin tends to wrinkle sooner and more that normal and oily skin types do.

Dry skin needs to be moisturized often — after every cleansing or rinsing, in the morning, in the evening, and whenever it feels dry.

For normal skin, morning and evening moisturizing should be sufficient. Young people can get away with moisturizing their skin just in the morning, but the older you get, the drier your skin may become.

If you have oily skin, an occasional use of a light moisturizer may be needed — for instance, after cleansing, but in general your skin oils help keep your skin’s natural moisture in.

To avoid losing skin moisture, limit cleansing to the minimum — once a day for dry and normal skin types, no more than twice a day for oily skin. Avoid using soaps as they tend to dry your skin, use cream or emulsion cleansers instead. See the cleansing section above for details and recommendations.

When choosing a moisturizer, look for one that provides you with vitamins and antioxidants for additional protection — for example:

Skintelligence Daily Moisture Enhancer for sensitive skin;

Timeless Prescription Face Firming Moisturizer w/MDI Complex for mature skin; or

VitaShield Vitamin C & E Intensive Moisturizer for superior antioxidant protection against free radicals.

While focusing on your face, don’t forget about the rest of your body. After a bath or a shower, the Royal Spa Smooth As Silk Hydrating Lotion will soften your skin and increase its elasticity by enabling it to hold moisture better. And the soothing Ultimate Aloe Gel will moisturize your hands, as well as reduce itching and redness from minor burns, scratches, cuts, shaving nicks and insect bites.

6. Protect your skin against free-radical damage

Free radicals are unstable molecules that attack other molecules in your body, turning them into… more free radicals. In this process, they can oxidize and damage healthy cells in your body, resulting in premature aging and dozens of degenerative diseases. [Learn more…]

You attract free radicals every time you are exposed to radiation (even that from sunshine!) or pollutants (such as tobacco smoke, fuel emissions, and many others). Being your largest organ, your skin absorbs a lot of free radicals every moment of your life.

The good news is — free radicals can be neutralized, their negative action can be stopped, and its results can sometimes be reversed.

The agents that can neutralize free radicals are called “free radical scavengers” or antioxidants.

Among the most potent antioxidants present in some skin care products are vitamins A, C and E, Coenzyme Q10, Iniferine (a complex of antioxidant vitamins, minerals and enzymes), and OPCs (oligomeric proanthocyanidins — say this 10 times fast!)

The following are examples of skin care products that provide you with excellent antioxidant protection against free radicals:

7. Protect your skin against the harsh environment

Before Exposure

“An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.”

This statement is so true about skin protection. Instead of getting dry skin from exposure to water, wind or chemicals, instead of being bitten by bugs, why not shield yourself from these and other trouble makers with appropriate clothing and by other means?

The nontoxic, biodegradable ClearShield Mousse creates an invisible shield for your skin, and makes you invisible to bugs! It also moisturizes your skin with aloe vera and vitamin E.

ClearShield protects your skin without affecting your sense of touch or the natural mobility of your hands or fingers. It allows your skin to carry out its normal functions, including perspiration and sweating.

ClearShield has hundreds of applications, including protection for:

• hair dressers and beauticians — against harsh shampoos, permanent wave solutions, peroxides, hair sprays and most dyes

• food service workers — against irritants in foods, cleaning compounds, oven and drain cleaners

• health professionals — against skin damage caused by wearing latex or vinyl gloves or by frequent hand-washing

• babies — against diaper rash

• outdoors lovers and workers — against flies and other bugs

ClearShield will protect your skin against irritants for up to 4 hours. During that time, it will not wash off with water. Within 4 hours, it will come off naturally — reapply it at that point if you need further protection.

Please note that ClearShield does NOT kill germs, and should be used in addition to protective gloves or clothing. It also does NOT protect against the sun’s radiation — try the Motives Sunscreen (SPF 30) instead. (Read more about sun protection below.)

After Exposure

It can happen to the best — you might forget to protect your skin, or your exposure to irritants or the elements might last longer that expected. As a result, your skin might get damaged.

Now what?

You can relieve minor burns (including sunburn), dry skin (also due to windburn), insect bite irritations, shaving nicks, and minor scrapes and cuts with Ultimate Aloe Gel. Made from 100% whole-leaf aloe vera, and containing an assortment of enzymes, amino acids, vitamins and minerals, Ultimate Aloe Gel helps heal wounds, kill germs, as well as rejuvenate and moisturize your skin.

Here Comes the Sun Enjoy the great outdoors, but protect yourself against the harsh elements Enjoy the great outdoors, but protect yourself against the harsh elements

Do you like basking in the sun? Its warmth may feel very pleasant at the moment, and its light is necessary to sustain life on Earth, but the sun can also be a silent killer.

There are two ways in which sun rays can damage your skin:

1. Immediately visible and apparently short-term — suntan and sunburn.

2. Sneaky and definitely long-term — skin aging and cancer.

Tanning is a response to skin injury by the sun’s ultraviolet radiation. Suntan and sunburn can both lead to permanent damage that one day may reveal itself in the form of wrinkles, skin discoloration, or skin cancer.

How can you protect yourself against sunburn?

Stay away from the sun when its rays are the strongest (between 10am and 3pm).

Wear sun-protective clothing — dark clothes that cover as much of your body as possible, and apply sunscreen to all skin areas that remain exposed.

• Use sunscreens that protect against both UV-A and UV-B radiation, and that have SPF (Sun Protection Factor) 15 or higher.

What does SPF tell you?

Your sunscreen’s SPF value helps you estimate how long it will take you to get sunburn while wearing the sunscreen — if you don’t get out of the sun in time.

If you normally burn after X minutes in the sun without protection, multiply that number of minutes by the SPF value of your sunscreen.

Example:
If without protection you burn after 10 minutes in the sun, and your new sunscreen has SPF 15, you’ll burn after 150 minutes (2.5 hours) while wearing it. To avoid burning, get out of the sun after two hours or so.

We do NOT recommend that you stay in the sun anywhere near two hours at any given time, unless you’re wearing sun-protective clothing as well as the sunscreen!

SPF only tells you how long you’re protected against sunburn, it does not guarantee protection against skin cancer or aging.

In addition, SPF only deals with UV-B radiation. Unfortunately, the sun also creates UV-A radiation that is a lot more sneaky — it doesn’t give you a sunburn, but it penetrates your skin deeper than UV-B, can accelerate aging by damaging your skin’s collagen fibers, and produces free radicals that can cause skin cancer.

The Effects of the Sun’s Ultraviolet Radiation on Humans

The shorter the UV waves, the more deadly they can be

UV-C and shorter rays could be fatal to humans. The atmosphere’s ozone layer absorbs them entirely, however, its depletion resulting in “ozone holes” poses a serious danger to life on Earth.

UV-A rays don’t get absorbed by ozone and most of them reach the Earth. They can cause indirect damage by creating free radicals that accelerate the aging process and can contribute to cancer.

Ozone absorbs most UV-B rays, but some do reach the Earth. They are extremely harmful, causing sunburn, skin cancers, and accelerating the aging process.

Sun damage is cumulative. All the doses of ultraviolet radiation received by the skin throughout your life add up: the total dose leads to skin wrinkling, altered pigmentation and skin cancer.

In addition to using a sunscreen (e.g., Motives Sunscreen, which protects against both UV-A and UV-B, and has SPF 30), you can slow down, reduce or even revert some of the negative effects of the sun’s radiation by using certain skin care products. For example, VitaShield OPC-3 Triple Serum offers antioxidant defense against free radicals, including those generated by the sun, and Skintelligence Cellular Perfecting Complex can repair skin cells damaged by the sun. Combined, they can give you healthy, youthful skin for years to come.

How old is your skin?

Same age as you? Maybe, maybe not.

Your skin can age in two ways simultaneously:

1. The inevitable intrinsic aging is part of nature — how fast and to what extent this process takes place depends on your genes. All you can do is accept it with grace.

2. You can slow down extrinsic aging to some extent. It is caused by outside factors, such as exposure to the elements (sun, wind, rain, etc.), toxins, free radicals, and other factors against which you can protect your skin.

7 Signs of Aging
A survey of 6000 women from around the world identified the following signs of aging as the most relevant:

1. Fine lines & wrinkles
2. Rough skin texture
3. Uneven skin tone
4. Skin dullness
5. Visible pores
6. Blotches & age spots
7. Skin dryness
There are many signs and causes of skin aging

What Causes Skin Aging?

• Decreased collagen and elastin production makes your skin thinner and less flexible, which leads to wrinkling and sagging.

• Reduction in the size and number of sebaceous (oil) and sweat glands makes your skin dry and rough.

• Increased melanin pigment production contributes to skin discoloration.

• Slow metabolism and poor blood circulation can negatively affect skin color and texture.

• Your skin’s cell renewal process becomes less efficient, slowing down tissue repair and cell regeneration, and giving your skin a dull look.

Frequent exposure to the harsh environment (free radicals, pollution, sun, wind, etc.), as well as certain nutrient deficiencies can speed up and aggravate all of the above conditions.

How Can You Slow Down the Aging of Your Skin?

While little can be done about the natural, intrinsic aging process, you can reduce the extrinsic factors’ negative effects on your skin by limiting your exposure to them and by using appropriate anti-aging skin care products.

Some of the extrinsic factors to avoid are:
• Chemicals — choose natural cleaning and personal care products.
• Tobacco smoke — avoid both smoking and second-hand smoke.
• Sun’s radiation — wear sun-protective clothing and sunscreen.
• Irritation — avoid scrubbing your face with loofas and other harsh items.

Some of the anti-aging skin care products we recommend are:

• The high-end Cellular Laboratories De-Aging Crème and Re-Birth Serum address all aspects of skin aging, improving your skin’s color, moisture level, smoothness, elasticity, and giving it a healthy and youthful look and feel. They give the best results when used in tandem.

• The middle-of-the-road Timeless Prescription Anti-Aging Essentials 3-Piece Kit helps remove dead cells, giving your skin a more vibrant look; increases your skin’s firmness and elasticity, thus reducing wrinkles; moisturizes your skin and provides antioxidant protection against free radicals. The Kit consists of:
- Facial Exfoliating Cleanser with Enzymes
- MDI Firming Activator
- Face Firming Moisturizer with MDI Complex

• The budget-friendly, cost-effective Pentaxyl reduces wrinkles and age spots while hydrating your skin and increasing its firmness. It may also reduce the appearance of stretch marks and scars.

Is acne your major concern?

You are not alone! 50 million people in the USA suffer from acne. 13 million of those people are adults.

A diet deficient in certain nutrients, chronic stress, and pore-clogging cosmetics can all contribute to acne outbreaks. However, The main three causes of acne are:

1. Overactivity of sebaceous glands (a.k.a. oil glands)

Sebaceous glands are located throughout your skin, with their highest concentrations on your face, chest and back. They produce “sebum” — the oil that lubricates your skin’s surface.

When it is produced in excessive amounts, sebum can clog your pores.

2. Abnormal shedding and build-up of dead skin cells

In healthy skin, old cells are constantly dying and falling off to make room for new cells — at a rate of 30 to 40 thousand cells per minute!

No wonder that 70% of house dust is made up of dead skin cells.

If you are acne-prone, in your home this percentage could be even higher — you could be shedding up to five times as many skin cells as most other people do! However, instead of just falling off, many of the extra dead cells get sucked into your pores, clogging them some more.

3. Proliferation of “P. acnes” bacteria

P. acnes bacteria are routinely found on normal, healthy skin, and help control other, more harmful bacteria.

By preventing oxygen from getting in, oil and/or dead cells clogging your pores create a perfect environment for P. acnes to grow and multiply until they get out of control.

The bacteria digest the oil in the pores, producing a fatty acid waste that may cause inflammation. We call it acne.

How can you prevent the three causes of acne?

1. To prevent oily skin:

• Avoid overwashing, as it would over-dry your skin and thus increase sebum production.

• Maintain your skin’s optimal pH level [see pH section above] to help regulate the action of your oil glands.

• If you wear make-up, choose oil-free options. Some mineral powder cosmetics can be suitable.

• Avoid oily cosmetics of any kind (creams, moisturizers, sunscreens, etc.); instead, choose water-based skin care products.

2. To reduce build-up of dead skin cells:

• Use a mild exfoliating cleanser that will remove excess sebum and dead cells without irritating your skin.

• If you use masks, choose one that helps cleanse and shrink your pores, and use a toner afterwards to remove any remaining mask or cleanser particles.

3. To prevent excessive proliferation of P. acnes bacteria:

• Follow the above guidelines and you will automatically prevent your pores from creating P. acnes-friendly environments, thus keeping the bacteria’s growth in check.

• Use non-comodegenic (non-pore clogging) skin care products.

• If you already have acne, consider using anti-acne products that contain benzoyl peroxide — it kills P. acnes.

What else can you do to reduce acne outbreaks?

For overall health, avoid greasy, fried and processed foods, and maintain a balanced, nutritious diet, consisting mostly of whole, fresh foods. Specifically for acne prevention, choose foods that are rich in vitamins A, B5 and D, as well as zinc, potassium and chromium [see table above].

Drink enough water. It helps flush out toxins and distribute nutrients throughout your body, thus contributing to clear complexion and good overall health. [Learn more…]

To prevent skin irritation, avoid resting your face on your hands or any objects. Also, avoid rubbing your skin, whether with your hands, loofahs, sponges, towels or clothes. Irritated skin is not only more acne-prone, it also ages faster.

If you shave, do so gently. Use an electric razor, or a single-blade safety razor — with a sharp blade! Shave down rather than up to avoid cuts. Also, choose a thin, filmy shaving cream to create a smoother “ride” for the blade. Wipe your skin with a mild tonic after you shave to help further cleanse and shrink your pores.

Do not squeeze or pick your blackheads, whiteheads or pimples! By doing this you’d further damage your skin and attract harmful bacteria, both of which can worsen the inflammation and cause scarring.

Avoid showering or bathing in chlorinated water. Chlorine reacts with the proteins in your skin and makes it dry. This in turn increases the production of sebum. You can protect yourself against chlorine and many other contaminants by filtering your water. [Learn more…]

Learn to manage your stress and avoid known stressors. Chronic stress may lead to hormonal changes, some of which may contribute to acne breakouts.

How can you treat acne?

Is acne your main concern? Help is here.

In case of severe, cystic acne, see a dermatologist or a holistic healer who specializes in skin health. They will prescribe treatment that is best for you.

If your acne is mild or moderate, you can try oral or topical* remedies like the ones described below.

* Mild reactions (such as tingling of the skin) may occur during the first week or so of use of any topical remedy, as your skin may need time to get used to it. If the mild reaction continues well past one week, or if you experience a severe reaction, discontinue the product, consult your physician or allergist, and please let us know what your symptoms were and which product you believe caused them.

Timeless Prescription PrevaDerm Anti-Blemish Formula is a supplement that enhances your body’s natural defenses against P. acnes, helps detoxify your body of acne-causing impurities, has anti-inflammatory effect on your skin, thus reducing its redness, and helps repair skin cells. Like with any other supplement, consult your doctor before you consider taking PrevaDerm. There are no known side-effects to this product, however, lactose-sensitive individuals and vegans should avoid it as one of its active ingredients (lactoferrin) is derived from bovine milk.

The non-irritating, oil-free Timeless Prescription 3 Step Acne Care System leaves your skin fresh and clean while addressing the three major causes of acne.

• The cleanser renews your skin by gently exfoliating dead skin cells, removing dirt, oil and other impurities, and delivering benzoyl peroxide* to eliminate P. acnes bacteria.

• The toner refreshes your skin by deeply penetrating its pores to further remove excess oil.

• The lotion repairs your skin by keeping its pores free from excess oil and P. acnes through the action of the time-released benzoyl peroxide*.

* Please note that benzoyl peroxide may bleach towels, sheets and clothes. To prevent this, rinse the cleanser off very carefully before drying your skin and try drying with a disposable cotton pad instead of a towel (or use a white towel). Also, avoid direct contact with items you don’t want to get damaged until the lotion has completely dried.

The hypoallergenic, oil-free Timeless Prescription F.A.C.E. Pads remove dirt and oil from your skin without drying it. They perform these three major functions:

• The soft pads clear away dirt and surface contaminants.

• The natural enzymes emulsify body oils on the skin surface and in the pores, promoting a healthy complexion and preventing P. acnes from getting out of control.

• The zinc sulfate soothes the irritated skin and promotes its healing.

F.A.C.E. stands for Facial Astringent Cleansing Enzymes — although the pads can be used on your chest, arms, back, and other areas, as well. You can use the pads to cleanse your entire face and neck, or to treat exclusively the acne-affected spots.

There is also Timeless Prescription Anti Blemish Lotion. It is meant for overnight use on the affected spots only. It is alcohol based, so avoid it if your skin is very sensitive.
